Presidential Elections: BJP Nominates Draupadi Murmu

If elected, Murmu will be the first indigenous woman to hold the highest constitutional position, which is a real possibility given the BJP-led NDA’s numerical advantage.

Draupadi Murmu, the former governor of Jharkhand, was named as the ruling NDA’s presidential candidate by the BJP’s parliamentary board on Tuesday. JP Nadda, the BJP’s national president, spoke to the media after a vital meeting with the party’s senior officials, saying that for the first time, a woman tribal candidate was given precedence.

Murmu is Jharkhand’s first female governor, as well as the first woman and tribal leader from Odisha to be selected to a state’s governorship.

In a press statement, J.P. Nadda stated that,

For the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate. We announce Draupadi Murmu as NDA’s candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi complimented Murmu on Twitter, saying he is convinced she would be a wonderful President of our country.
