FIH Pro League: India’s hopes of winning the title shattered by the second defeat against the Netherland

The Indian men’s hockey team’s hopes of winning the FIH Pro League title were shattered with a loss of 1-2 by the Netherlands in the second match of the two-leg match on Sunday. India lost 1-4 to the Netherlands in a shoot-out in the opening match on Saturday as both the teams were tied 1-4 after 60 minutes of regular time. To keep their modest hopes of winning the title alive, India needed to register a win against the Netherlands but it did not happen.

Netherlands won the men’s title with 35 points from 14 matches while two matches are yet to be played. Olympic champions Belgium finished second with 35 points from 16 matches while India finished third with 30 points from 16 matches. India started the match brilliantly and took the lead within 30 seconds thanks to a field goal from Abhishek.  However, the Netherlands scored in the 7th minute of the match from a penalty corner by Zip Jensen to level the match.

Two minutes before half time, India got two back to back penalty corners but could not convert them into goals. In the third quarter, Jorit Kroon took the Netherlands 2-1 in the 45th minute. After this India got many chances to score but the Indian players could not deceive the Netherlands player.
