World Cup Qatar 2022: FIFA Will Deploy AI To Counter Online Hate Speech Directed At Players

With the Qatar World Cup less than five months away, FIFA has stated that it would collaborate with FIFPRO, the international representative organisation for professional footballers, on a strategy to better safeguard individuals.

In the run-up to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, a new independent analysis issued by FIFA has highlighted the rise in targeted hate speech on social media during major football competitions.

From November 21 to December 18, 2022, Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup.

The researchers analyzed at over 400,000 social media posts from the semi-finals and finals of Euro 2020 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021.

After missing their penalties in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, three England players were savagely abused online.

FIFA and FIFPRO will develop a specialised moderation service to address this, which will search for recognised hate speech phrases and delete them from the recipient’s and followers’ views if discovered.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated,

Our duty is to protect football, and that starts with the players who bring so much joy and happiness to all of us by their exploits on the field of play. We want our actions to speak louder than our words and that is why we are taking concrete measures to tackle the problem directly. This detection is not only there to protect football… but also to educate current and future generations who engage with our sport on social media as well as on the field of play.

  1. I think this will help gain players mentality and as now a days they are being thrashed and mocked in social media as they are also seeing it. After implementing this it will improve players as personality too. Good motive and support this channel guys valuable information being given.

  2. I feel this is very much needed as many players get affected by stuff they see on social media. Hope this move is effective. Good article!
