End of an Era: Internet Explorer retires after 27 years of service

Microsoft announced that it is going to end the journey of Internet Explorer on 15 June 2022, exactly after serving continuously for a span of 27 years. Social media turns nostalgic after hearing this news. The IE will be disabled from 15 June and the users will be automatically directed to Microsoft Edge browser instead of IE. Internet Explorer reminds of an era when Microsoft used to Boss the World in technology about 20 years ago. The programme was bundled with the Windows operating system, which helped Microsoft gain market dominance.

The experience was sometimes slow, and when speedier competition appeared in the form of Mozilla’s Firefox and later Google Chrome, users started getting deflected towards faster browsers. Microsoft stated that its decision to drop Internet Explorer was primarily motivated by the fact that web developers were less inclined to make their sites compatible with the browser. In 2020, Microsoft stopped supporting Internet Explorer 11 in web browsers in Windows 10 and Microsoft 365, and in August 2020, it also stopped supporting Internet Explorer 11 in Teams.

In 1995, Microsoft released Internet Explorer as a Windows 95 add-on package. Following that, Microsoft’s internet browser was made available to everyone as part of the Windows operating system’s later editions.
