India’s javelin sensation and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra sets a new national record and wraps up the silver medal with a throw of 89.30 metres at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland, surpassing his own prior national record of 88.07 meters which he’d set in Patiala in March last year. This was Chopra’s first spin in an International competition since his momentous gold medal- winning throw of 87.58 meters at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
The 89.30 meters throw marks him complete second on the tribune at the Paavo Nurmi Games behind the Finnish favourite Oliver Helander, who bagged a personal best of 89.93 meters. Meanwhile, Grenada’s ace Anderson Peters finished third with a throw of 86.60 meters.
The 24- year-old Chopra’s first competitive episode after precisely over 10 months was nothing short of phenomenal as he nearly touched the coveted 90m mark, regarded as the gold standard in the world of javelin throw.
With an opening throw of86.92 meters, Chopra’s succeeding throw was a mammoth89.30 meters. Although his next three flings were fouls, he came up with two throws of85.85 meters on his sixth and concluding attempts.
Furthermore, Chopra’s 89.30 meters Javelin throw has taken him to the fifth spot on the world season leaders ’ list.
Chopra had stated in recent media interactions that he’d not set himself under pressure with the thought of throwing beyond 90m and would look to build up gradually to the apex during the July World Championships in Eugene, USA.
Chopra will next take part in the Kourtane Games in Finland on Saturday where he’s presently based. He’ll feature in the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League on June 30. He’d already trained in the USA and Turkey before shifting base to Finland last month.
