Following the release of the Rajya Sabha results, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached out to her counterparts and other leaders on Saturday, inviting them to a conference in Delhi on June 15 to discuss the impending presidential elections, which are set for July 18.
“The presidential elections provide the ideal occasion for the progressive opposition parties to reassemble and discuss on the future direction of Indian politics,” Banerjee said.
“At a time when our democracy is under challenges, I believe that a productive confluence of opposing voices is essential; to reflect the deprived and unrepresented people,” she continued.
The letter was sent to 22 people, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann
The BJP-led alliance is expected to receive more than 48 percent of the vote in an electoral college of roughly 10.86 lakh ballots, and it is hoping for support from non-aligned regional parties such as the YSR Congress and the BJD during the presidential election.
The BJP’s better-than-expected performance has once again exposed the opposition’s disunity and lack of unity from Maharashtra to Karnataka and Haryana.
