IIT Kanpur’s new tool to help police investigate cryptocurrency fraud

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) will give an in-house technology to assist the Uttar Pradesh police in detecting and investigating incidents of bitcoin theft.

According to Professor Sandeep Shukla of IIT-Kanpur, the HOP tool created by IIT can analyse bitcoin transactions. “The tool is cheaper than any foreign equipment. By September, our tool will be ready to serve the UP police and help in investigations in cases of cryptocurrency fraud,” Shukla stated.

Subhash Chandra, ADG of Cybercrime department, underlined the need of cybercrime awareness programmes and capacity-building for police agencies in preparation to combat the threat.

“We have taken action against 37,000 accounts, banks and cards, and also recovered Rs 9.5 crore in a year,”

Subhash Chandra, ADG, Cybercrime.

Triveni Singh, SP, Cybercrime, said the course is a joint initiative of the MHA and the Uttar Pradesh Police Department, and it is one of the first of its kind to raise cyber safety awareness and build competence in police units.

Basic skills and procedures, he noted, are essential for investigating VOIP-based conversations, which have become increasingly common in extortion instances.
