‘Yesterday’s fringe is mainstream today’: says Congress in response to BJP’s fresh offensive

On Wednesday, Congress leader Pawan Khera continued his party’s attacks on the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) over the now-sacked spokespeople’s controversial remarks, saying the country should not be forced to be ashamed of the ruling party’s behavior.

The Congress criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP on Wednesday for their actions against Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal over the Prophet issue, claiming that India had been disgraced on the global stage for the past eight years.

Pawan Khera, a national spokesperson for the Congress, said

“As a country, we had to face a lot of shame in the past week. The entire world had a beautiful image of India as a country which is proud of the kind of disparate contradictions that it has taken along,”

The BJP has reacted to the outrage over the two leaders’ statements by condemning the “insult to any religious persons of any religion.” The government’s foreign affairs ministry distanced itself from the contentious remarks about Prophet Mohammed, stating they did not reflect the government’s beliefs and that “there are views of fringe elements.”

Taking a jibe at the government calling its spokespersons “fringe elements”, Khera said, “You have also been through the same journey to reach where you are right now. You cannot call your people fringe.” He added these ‘fringe’ members of BJP Sharma and Jindal will be placed in the mainstream by the same party. “Yesterday’s fringe is today’s mainstream and today’s fringe will become tomorrow’s mainstream.”
