Corbevax, a Covid vaccine from Biological E, certified for a booster dosage

Biological E, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm and vaccine maker, stated on Saturday that the DCGI (Drugs Controller General of India) has approved its Covid vaccine Corbevax for booster dose to individuals aged 18 years. Corbevax is the first heterologous Covid booster vaccine to be approved in India, according to the manufacturer. BE’s Corbevax booster shot can be given six months after the original two doses of Covaxin or Covishield have been administered.

Corbevax acquired emergency use authorization for the 5-12-year-old age group from the drug controller in April. The approval came after a recommendation from the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) based on an assessment of interim vaccination safety and immunogenicity data for this age group. This approval came less than a month after the vaccine was approved for youngsters aged 12 to 15.
Last month, the pharmaceutical business dropped the price of its Covid vaccine for private Covid vaccination centres from Rs 840 to Rs 250 per dosage, inclusive of GST. The price was set at Rs 400 per dose for the end user, including taxes and administration fees.

The move came just weeks after Biological E was granted an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for youngsters aged 5 to 12. The prior private market pricing for the vaccine, including taxes and vaccination administration fees, was Rs 990 per dose.
The company added in a statement that its vaccine is also available in a single-dose vial, making vaccination administration easier. It eliminates vaccination waste, which is a significant benefit for hospitals, according to the company.
