Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, met today with Ajit Doval, the National Security Advisor, to address the current wave of targeted killings in Kashmir. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, also attended the meeting.
NSA Doval is currently meeting with Mr Shah in North Block. It’s been nearly an hour since the meeting began.
The conference takes place on the same day that a bank manager from Rajasthan was shot and killed by a terrorist in Kulgam, Jammu & Kashmir, in the Valley’s second targeted attack against Hindus in three days.
Vijay Kumar, the bank manager, was shot by a terrorist who entered the Elaqahi Dehati Bank branch in Areh. The killer is seen entering the branch, firing a shot, and fleeing on CCTV. When Vijay Kumar passed away, he was being transported to the hospital.
The attack comes just two days after militants assassinated Rajni Bala, a Hindu teacher from Jammu, outside a school in Kulgam.
The assassination of the bank manager in Kulgam came just 24 hours after two significant incidents in the neighbouring Shopian region. Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, a civilian, was injured in a targeted terror strike inside his home late last night.
Three soldiers were hurt in another incident this morning after an explosion in their truck. One of the soldiers is in critical condition.
The three soldiers had taken a private vehicle for an anti-terrorist operation, according to the Army. The explosion happened as they were on their approach to the target area, they claimed.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan has denounced the murders and conveyed his sorrow. He also chastised the NDA government for failing to sustain the peace in Kashmir, saying that civilians safety must be ensured.
The new incident comes amid ongoing protests by Kashmiri Pandits in the Union Territory, who are asking that they be transferred to safer locations. Since Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit, was shot dead inside the magistrate’s office in Budgam last month, members of the community have been protesting.
Approximately 4,000 Kashmir Pandits who were employed in the Valley as part of the Prime Minister’s rehabilitation programme have vowed to leave because they no longer feel safe. The Union Territory administration erected barricades and sealed the gates of transit camps to prevent them from leaving.
